What a way to kick off the Track Season. The Otago Spring 3000m Challenge race is a collaborated event between Athletics Otago and the University of Otago. This is an Open Event for any Community, University, or Club athlete aged 15+. Entries close at 4:30pm on Thursday, 24 September 2026 Description of Event
This open 3000m event welcomes participants aged 14 years and above from the community, University, or affiliated clubs. Races will be organised into A and B divisions according to submitted seed times and entry volume. Competition numbers can be collected from the Control Room at the Caledonian Ground and must be visibly worn on the front during the race. Please return your competition number following the completion of your event.
In addition there is a 3000m for community runners and newbies to the track or anyone who just wants to have a go. Visit here for updates Entry Fee: $15, payable online through the Eventplus Entry portal. This year a Social 3000m has been included for those wanting to just give it a go. Note: entrants must be 13+. Still need to enter online and pay an entry fee of $5.50 Results will be available on Webscorer.com, the Athletics Otago website and the Athletics Otago Facebook page. - Orokonui Challenge8:00 amThe Orokonui Challenge is back in 2026 bigger than ever. This years course has grown to a 21.8km scenic course. Test yourself as you run over volcanoes, along beautiful coast, and through the protected Orokonui nature reserve. All participants can feel a sense of achievement not only for completing the challenge but also supporting biodiversity, with all proceeds going towards Orokonui’s own challenge in wildlife advocacy and conservation. The course starts near the Visitor centre carpark then runs along part of the Orokonui fence line, down the coastal connection cycleway, out to Doctor’s Point beach, back and around the Orokonui lagoon, and into the sanctuary to finish with a climb through the sanctuary’s protected forest. The total course length is approximately 21.8km and contains around 600m of elevation change. Refuel and recharge after the race with an included catered lunch from the Horopito café. Enjoy a range of their most popular items as well as a beverage buffet with coffee, tea, and juices. Use code EARLY26 to sign up before the 20th of September to get early bird pricing.
