In remembrance of Lachie Ashton
4 December 1956 – 21 January 2021
It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Lachie in Dunedin on Thursday, January 21, 2021. The very dearly loved husband of Valerie, loved father of Daniel, Anna, Tracy, and the late Neil, loved grandfather of Archie, Isabel, and Tyler, and brother of Margaret and Janice of Leith Harriers. The Leith Harrier & Athletic Club members extend their love and condolences to his family.
Leith Harrier & Athletic Club members paid tribute to Lachie and his family by attending the beautiful and emotional memorial service for Lachie which was held in the Hope and Sons Chapel, Dunedin on Wednesday, 27 January 2021.
Lachie will be fondly be remembered as a long time Leith Harriers club stalwart who gave his all in the tough discipline of running and the many other pursuits in which he was involved. Lachie had been a member of the club right from about 1967 when he began his harriers running career as a prominent junior colt in a very large and strong Leith younger brigade. He remained with the club throughout his running career competing prominently in many club, centre and national events in cross country, track, trail and road.
Recently in 2019, Lachie had one of his best achievements in the 26km Three Peaks Mountain Race where he finished first in the MM60+ grade in 2 hours 57 minutes 24.8 seconds. We will remember Lachie as a great competitor and fellow runner and will treasure the times spent with him on club runs and races over the years. Hasta la vista, our mate!
