Leith had two representatives at these champs. Congratulations to Craig Iversen and Kimberley Iversen who both ran faster than they thought they would. Read Craig’s story further below:
1 Sagar Khemani Fiordland SM20-34, 10km 34:09.0
2 Craig Iversen Leith MM50+ 34:19.0
1 Kimberley Iversen Leith SW 38:32.0 PB
1 Debbie Telfer Invercargill MW60-69, 5km 23:53.0
1 Craig Junior Iversen Invercargill BU14, 5km 17:11.0
2 Sean Iversen Invercargill BU14, 5km 18:52.0
Craig had this to say about their performance
Kimberley and I entered the 10km Road Champs in Invercargill at the Teretonga Speedway circuit and to be honest, we’d both had a tough time with our training lately. Myself with persistent DOMS for the last 10 days, Kimberley coming out of an illness that had been hanging around since the week leading into Cross Country nationals. We both had decided to give it all we could, but both were also realistic about the possibilities. Kimberley ran a 38:47 on the track last year and thought she’d struggle to get near 39mins today but managed to pull out a pretty good 38:31! Last year I ran 35:20 on the course, although despite my training issues managed to pull out a surprising 34:15. We were both pretty pleased with this and it gives a lift to know that when problems fade away that the underlying ability is still there! Sean (11) ran a very handy 5km at 18:50 and CJ (13) took his 5km PB down to 17:09, so it was a really good day out for us all!

Congratulations to Leith’s Nina Batucan who ran her first half marathon on Sunday in Birmingham UK.
Her racing stats:
Gun Time 01:38:29, 188/174 overall, 9th of 283 in her age group, 11th female
Chip Time 01:37:33, 191/1754 overall, 9/283 in her age group, 12/540 female
Here is what Nina had to say about her achievement
The day was forecasted to be hot and sunny, and sun beat down indeed. I think it was between 20-22 C, so was pleased with the decision to carry a water bladder. The terrain was undulating and the last 5K had a long section of a gentle uphill. Familiarity can bring comfort, so when it got tough, a mental strategy I did was to imagine people who have similar looking “back view” as running mates I know of. For example, one lady with a ponytailed blonde hair looked like Aly C. from behind so I pretended it was her, who I managed to lap eventually (probably something I couldn’t have done if it was actually Aly!). Doing so placed me in a similar ambience as when doing the grunt work on Sole Tuesdays. I was aiming for 1:40 and managed 1:37 so was really chuffed; I was 9th in my age group and 12th overall female category. Really happy with the effort and sets a good baseline for future halfs

Some impressive performances from the Leith athletes, some were winding down from the grueling NZ Cross Country Champs the day before though. Leith’s Simon Cromarty had a brilliant run, winning this race in 1:10:51. James Davies shaved 6 minutes off his half marathon PB as well as posting PBs over the 5km and 10km along the way. Steve Smith showed that his 3 hr 53 min Dunedin Harbour Marathon time last year was no fluke and who despite recent injury ran an excellent 1:56:05 to win the MM70+ category (he is actually 75+) – congratulations are definitely in order here!

Simon Cromarty wins and James Davies shaves 6 minutes off his Half Marathon PB
James had this to say…
“First time I’ve raced a half in a few years, so wasn’t really sure what to expect. Had a 1:20 goal, trying to eclipse my previous half PB set on a mid-winter Monday night post work last year.
Last couple weeks have been “fun” with training, from concussion, to taper, but following Margie’s guidance, came out swinging.
Simon (Cromarty) took the field out hot, I finally settled in after about 5km to a nice rhythm. Ignore the fact I ran 5km and 10km PB’s, was stoked to finish just over an hour, 16minutes, shaving 6minutes off last years misery”

Lee Flowers flew the Leith Blue and White flag (or rather singlet) at this fantastic and scenic marathon event held around Windermere Lake
He finished 71/444, Male 68/326, MM55 2nd 2/22 in a time of 3:39:37
Here is Lee’s story
I am currently visiting friends and family back in the UK. Catching up with old friends and family invariably means eating and drinking far too much.
So, to combat the weight gain and fitness loss, I decided to run each morning at the crack of dawn (first light is around 4.30am) which is fine as I still haven’t fully switched my circadian rhythm to UK/European time zones.
But I also researched what events were taking place during my visit in the local area. There were a couple of events that looked interesting, Ultras, two-day events etc… but I said to myself not to go and do crazy stuff as my current fitness levels are not that great at the moment.
One event sang out more than the others – a marathon in the Lake District in Cumbria. Circumnavigating around lake Windermere.
Lake Windermere in the Lake District National Park is one of the most stunning parts of the world and has very fond memories for me as a child visiting this stunning part of the Country. It’s a place for all types of outdoor adventures both on the lake, in the lake or around the rolling hills/mountains and would (not often enough) head up there on long weekends in my younger days for some memorable trips.
The area is also world famous for a local author named – Beatrix Potter and the even more famous book character Peter Rabbit or this this just a British thing ? There is a house where she wrote her books you can visit, owned now by the National Trust.
Unfortunately, over the years, like most places in the UK, its fallen victim of its own success, by that I mean visitor numbers have swelled out of control. The old country lanes in and out of the area are so congested, you often think twice before taking a trip.
Anyway, race day – A marathon around a lake on mostly closed/semi closed roads, flat course you say ? that is what I thought as well, but no ! there wasn’t a single bit of flat road, I believe the elevation gain was around 650 meters, which didn’t sound too bad on paper, problem was we didn’t run on paper (haha). Also bear in mind, it’s been a long time since a ran a road marathon, almost 10 years ago but the thought of running through this beautiful scenery was something I was looking forward too.
The event itself was part of a festival of activities, including open water swims in Lake Windermere which happened to be on the same day. I wasn’t sure how many runners had entered and would be running as the event (like so many around the country) had stopped because of covid.
In all, I believe there was around 500 runners, which for me personally was a good number, it made the event more personal and not a mass major sponsored event like some events I have ran in over the years.
We all headed to the start line, where I saw and heard the organizer say that there would be pacers this year, in increments of 30 mins, starting at 3.30 mins. I have yet to break the 3.30 barrier (by quiet a few minutes) and with the pre-start mindset of just enjoying this course and the scenery coupled with the elevation of the course, now was not a good time to break any records or set PB’s.
So, against my better judgement I decided to hang with the 3.30 min pacer. I have never run with pacers before, so that was new. The pace he set was consistent to start with, with a little faster than the 5 min/km pace needed because I heard him say to another athlete that we needed to bank a bit of time for the second half of the race as there were a few more hills to tackle.
First 13 miles went well, running with a bunch of athletes of around 20 people, it felt like a Sunday jog with a group of friends as there was no one else in sight both in front and behind. I did feel however out of place with the people around me, they looked like serious club runners with their club colours on view and started thinking that I have bitten off more than I could cope with but I had my Leith Colours on, so I said yes, I do belong I said.
I did hear someone say that we were going at quiet a pace for this course and that we would pay for it later… how true that was. Straight after we passed the 13-mile marker, we turned a corner and suddenly was faced with what looked like a wall. A very sleep hill that seem to go on forever, not what you want after 13 miles. All the group including the pacer was not prepared to run up the hill, so we all walked.
At the top of this particular hill the pacer thought we had lost too much time (course was new to him) so he picked up the pace to gain the time back, this is when the wheels fell off. I lost touch with him and the group pretty soon after the hill and decided that from now on, to run my own race (it was nice while it lasted).
The next 10K or so was hard work, dark places and just focusing on one foot in front of another, each hill became harder and harder to navigate. At around the 30K mark a pit stop in the loo at an aid station and a stretch of the legs, I found a second wind and picked up the pace again pretty much to the end, picking off a few of my old 3.30 group that I hadn’t seen for a while along the way.
In the end I was only 2/3 minutes off my PB for a marathon, given the elevation I think this must be the best Marathon I have ever run.
As I crossed the finish line, what hit me the most was a sense of achievement yes but more importantly not being able to share my stories and experience with my fellow group of athletes from my own club and hearing about how they got on with their own race, that sense of pride we all share from our little community known as Leith Harriers, is priceless, I missed that side of it.
What I got from this event was actually how lucky we are in Dunedin, particularly our Leith running club, the sense of community and how we are all there for one another, no matter what level we run at.
Long may that continue, sorry for the long script but looking forward to seeing you all again in a couple of weeks
A shout out to the organisers, the event ran like clockwork, all potential issues were catered for, including a park and ride scheme to get all the athletes and swimmers into the start areas on time without causing major headaches or stress trying to find a park in the small village hamlets on top of all the summer tourist. I would fully recommend this event for anyone that happens to be in the area when the event takes place next year.
