Huge congratulations to James Pemberton who on Monday completed the 130th Boston Marathon in a brilliant 3:25:27 — finishing 932nd in his M50-54 age group out of 1,874. Incredible stuff James! Half Way – 01:39:16, Finish Nett – 03:25:27, Finish Gun – 03:27:55

James on the morning after his marathon effort and meeting Bill Clinton at the finish:
“Boston was absolutely amazing. It had been a dream for a few years and my Christchurch marathon last year was a qualifying time. Prep had been suboptimal so stoked with my finish time. The weather for the few days before had been awful – cold, wet and a wind off the Atlantic. Race day was perfect though. A light westerly (tail wind for the whole race), clear skies and cool at 8C. Atmosphere for the whole route fantastic. Amazing to run through all the Boston suburbs especially Framingham (lots of cardiology trails from there). Finish in Boston mind blowing, then met Bill Clinton at the finish line!
Legs a bit sore this morning but otherwise feeling great. Looking forward to training on Tuesday”

The Leith legend, the man, Mr John Bayne has smashed his PB and is now 2nd best 24hr runner in NZ history at NZ 6 Day Ultramarathon. Results are not yet available

Back for Redemption – by John Bayne
The hooter went and we were finally underway in my 1st ultra since the World 24hr Champs in France 6 months ago. Many things didn’t pan out in that race and i was back for redemption. I have been coaching myself since then and after reflecting on my results last year decided to make a lot of changes.
My race plan was to break the race into 4 quarters: 1st quarter is “the warm up” do as little as possible while clocking up 66-70km, 2nd quarter settle into an easy, consistent pace and “quieten the mind”, third quarter “hold the pace” last quarter “get it done!” push as hard as possible without blowing the hammies apart.
Alongside this I also mentally break the race down further into 1 hour segments and try to only think about the hour that I am running and how many km I need to do in that hour.
Long running story short – things went to plan. There were certainly hiccups along the way (nose bleed, pre-cramps to hammies, glutes, quads, adductors and abbs and 1 lap of vomiting), but my fantastic crew were able to deal with every issue, along with keeping me fuelled and running in the right direction.
I am goal driven and am chasing the NZ open record and the World 60+ record.
I fell a little short of both but they are getting way closer now and i am happy to improve my pb by over 16km and pick up a few more NZ age group records.
Geoff Capon 5km Self Handicap, Wednesday 25 February 2026
Caledonian Ground, Logan Park Drive, Dunedin
Congratulations to all took part and helped marshal and organise. This race is held each year in honour of Geoff Capon who was an accomplished runner, especially in the steeplechase event. Geoff Capon was also once a Leith member, having joined the club in 1995.
The format in this event is simple – give the starter your predicted 5km time over the course and see how close you get to it without wearing a watch. The one closest to their predicted time is the winner. We have an overall winner and we have male and female categories trophies. There is also a trophy for the fastest time (male or female).
