Stephen Johnson honoured to represent Leith, and Otago

Stephen writes…

I had the honour of running at the National Championships this weekend, an honour for many reasons; to represent Leith, to represent Otago, and to race at the Caledonian, where we all train so often.

On Thursday, I ran the 800m heats. After a hot first lap (high 55 seconds) it took a lot to hang on. I found myself off the back and with 120m to go, found another gear. I kept thinking ‘arms arms arms’ as I made my way down the final 100m, passing the runner to my left, and eyeing the clock for a PB. I finished 5th in the faster heat, but I was 0.3 seconds off fastest qualifier. Still, for my 4th ever 800m, I was stoked.

Saturday was the real treat, running in the 1500m. I drew a spicy heat, with none-other than Olympian Sam Tanner, Oli Chignell (who won the 5k on Thursday) and a plethora of very fast runners. Regardless, I felt a sense of calm and enjoyment. I viewed the race not as a hard test, but as a celebration of all the training done with Leith over the year.

The race started slow and tactical, so I nestled into the pack. I was in awe, gazing at the packed grandstand and thinking ‘wow, I’m in the national 1500m!’. The race gradually picked up, and I jostled for position, knowing a fast final 400m was inbound. The last lap was full tilt; I ran 59 seconds for that last lap; fast, but not fast enough, which was expected. Still, I picked up 10th/13 in my heat, 17th out of 25 overall, and a PB in a tactical race. Truly special.

I’m so grateful to the Leith family for all the runs, support, and vibes we bring. Our sense of community is what makes us stronger, being there for each other, and encouraging each to take that next leap.

Next up? A new era of running me as I’m a Dad in the making; my wife’s due date was the day of the 1500m, but baby is still holding in! An exciting way to enter a new chapter, and you’ll see me soon testing the limits of buggy running.

The weather produced a gusty South Wester which made the going tough in the back straight.  Nevertheless some quality times were produced by the Leith contingent.  Although not a personal best, in those tough conditions Stephen Johnson cracked the 16 minute barrier in the 5000, likewise Nathan Shanks broke the 17 minute barrier. The wind was too strong for any personal bests.  The Leith supporters were out there again urging their runners on. We will add to this report once we have ascertained if any personal bests were achieved. We will have some photos of the action posted on Monday

On Day One

Leith athletes performed well on a brilliantly sunny and warm day. The 1500m races were first up and were run in still and warm conditions resulting in many personal bests. Near the end of the meeting we had the 400m sprints run in slightly more windy conditions

On Day Two

Again brilliant weather – sunny and hot with not much wind to speak about. And again, plenty of Leith athletes performing well, winning races and achieving personal bests. The three Leith teams which competed in the last track event of the day, the 4 x 400m impressed with some powerful running

Leith Results and Report

There were some landmark performances from Leith athletes over the weekend. Here are some of the highlights.

Stephen Johnson, having just recently dipped below the 2 minute barrier in the 800m the week before and he did it again on Sunday morning with a personal best of 1 minute 59.09 seconds in a race where he challenged all the way in one of the greatest finishes in an Otago championship event, finishing a narrow third to Queenstown’s James Weber 1:58.08 and Hill City-University’s Matthew Bolter (1:58.10).  The day before he had set a personal best in the 1500m in finishing second in 4:06.44 to the quality young runner Hill City-University’s Jake Owen (4:06.14).

In the 1500m on Saturday afternoon, the Leith Lasses trio of Alice Cuthbert, Claudia Sole and Stephanie Wilson also had landmark performances.  Alice Cuthbert had a great win in the Senior Women’s with a personal best of 4:51.49. Claudia Sole finished second in the personal best of 4:54.08 and Stephanie Wilson finished third in a personal best  of 4:55.11 to give Leith the trifecta in the Otago Senior Women’s Champs.  On Sunday Alice Cuthbert achieved a personal best in the 800m of 2:22.01 in winning the Senior Women’s Otago Title.

James Pemberton dominated the Men’s 50+ events with wins and PBs in the 800m, 1500m and 3000m. Jessica Bray won the Women 3000 Metre Run Under 20 in 10:52.36.  Ash Dustow showed the youngsters how to do it with awesome times in the Men 65-69 1500m (5:50.73) and 3000m (12:22.62). Graham Fisher was the best performed Leith athlete in the 3000m with a personal best of 9:11.39, having also competed in the shorter sprint events.  See the full Leith Grade and Heats results further below

The 4 x 400 Relay  Senior Women, Senior Men

This was defnitely one of the highlights of the Champs on the final day and the final track event of the weekend. The Leith and friends supporters were out in full force urging on the Leith teams.  Although outgunned by the quality young runners from Hill City-University, they put up a tremendous show and made this a race to remember.

Jason Van Kempen writes….

This was the ” First track event since early high school. I was a bit apprehensive about running 25 laps but ended up loving the challenge. Great bunch of people, fantastic support and ideal conditions.”

Marc Boulle writes…

It was great to see the supporters out there. Thanks for the encouragement along the way, it helped me enormously. It was getting tough trying to focus on keeping a pace that would not result in me having a blowout. I knew I had the record in the bag and was not trying to be a hero in that heat and rather just went for the record instead of trying to get under 50 minutes. Well done to those who got pbs and Otago titles, it was awesome having the other runners offering encouragement along the way and clapping me in.  Thanks also to the officials and the lap counters.  Hopefully next season we can get even more athletes competing in these champs. For example there are athletes in the Men’s 70-74 age grade that on the day could have gone appreciably faster than I did. However, if one doesn’t enter the event then the chance of getting official pbs, obtaining Otago titles or breaking records is lost due to the normally once a year running of the 10000m on the track in Dunedin. It would be great to see a bunch of M70-74 athletes competing against one another in driving the Otago Record down to world class level. The same applies to all grades in the women’s and men’s fields

Nathan Shanks won the Men’s Men 35-49 grade in a personal best of 4:29.31

Otago 3000 Metre Steeplechase Champs

New Leith athlete Graham Fisher finished second  in the Champs in a personal best of 10:13.03 to the young quality Hill City-Uni athlete Jake Owen who won the title in 9:58.78 breaking away from Fisher over the last few laps

5000m

Liam Turk won the 5000m race in 16:57.75 leading a procession of Leith athletes consisting of (2) Sam Bradbury-Leather (17:12.89), (3) Nathan Shanks (17:15.94) and (4) Bryan Staunton (18:46.04).  Staunton was still apparently feeling the effects of having run a hard Dunedin Park Run in the early morning and faded somewhat over the last few laps. Maybe he would get a personal best in the 5000m if he chose to just run the track on the day?

400m

In the last race of the day, Alice Cuthbert won the 400m race in a fast 63.45 with Stephanie Wilson second in 68.00. Claudia Sole was third in the W20-34 grade in 69.64 finishing fifth in the race overall.  In his third race of the day, Graham Fisher also tackled the 400m finishing fourth in the men’s 20-34 grade and fifth overall in 56.59.  See the full Leith grade and heat results below

There were quite a number of personal bests today over the various distances.  See the Leith specific results further below. It was great to see Leith in numbers in the 3000m and 800m fields with Liam Turk winning the 3000m in dominating fashion leading from start to finish. His time was 9:30.71, Leith’s Nathan Shanks finished second in 9:54.22.  Likewise, Leith’s Alice Cuthbert won the women’s 3000m in 10:44.54 followed by Claudia Sole in second place in 10:45.42 both having also posted PBs in the 800m earlier on in the meeting.  Congratulations to you all.  Special mention must be made of a grand performance by Otago Master Runner Des Dawson who broke the NZ and Otago Record for the MM90-94 grade in the 800m with a time of 4:32.49, well under the previous record time – see results further below

There was a superb performance today by 92 year old Otago Masters Athlete Des Campbell where he set a New Zealand and Otago Record in the M90-94 grade in the 1500m in a time of 9 minutes 50.32 seconds. He was roundly applauded by his fellow athletes and the appreciative stadium crowd. His competitors each shook his hand when he finished. Definitely one of the legends of the track in New Zealand

Leith was out in force today running sprints, middle distance and long distance events.  Some really brilliant performances with fantastic gutsy wins for Alice Cuthbert (1500m) and Liam Turk (5000m) and personal bests galore.

There were quality runs by Alice Cuthbert and Claudia Sole in the women’s 1500m where Alice took the race to the masters women’s athlete from Hill City-University Taryn McLean.  She built a big enough lead over the last two laps to nullify Taryn’s challenge at the end beating her by almost 4 seconds to finish in a personal best of 4:57.95.  Claudia Sole finished an excellent third in the race (2nd Senior Women) holding out the speedy youth runner Eva McLean (Hill City-Un) by just over a second to finish in a personal best of  5:05.40.  Later in the 5000m, Alice Cuthbert achieved an excellent personal best 19:02.79

One of the performances of the day was that of Leith’s Liam Turk, who not only posted two personal bests in the 1500m and the 5000m, he also won the 5000m.  After finishing sixth in the 1500m in a personal best of 4:30.92, he then later dominated the 5000m metres to win the race in a personal best of 16:49.79. His team mates Nathan Shanks (17:09.88) and Ben Pigou (17:48.10) finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

There was a fantastic turnout of Leith runners today. Running events from 60m to the 3000m Steeples.  The weather was sunny and cool with a stiff breeze blowing down the back straight.  One could be forgiven for thinking there were double the number of Leith athletes out at the track with a number of them tackling mulitiple events.  David Liddell must have been the most tired after the 3000m Steeplechase having already done the 800m and flat 3000m races with young Calan McDermott not far behind and Fraser Bailey doing the 60m and 200m sprints, Nathan Shanks and Ben Pigou ran the 800m and 3000m flat. Florence Reynolds showed that she has not lost any of her ability on the track especially the 2000m Steeples.     Well done to all those who took part. Check out Florence’s report further below:

Florence Reynolds’s Steeplechase Report plus more…

It was perfect conditions on the track this morning! The warm sun and lack of wind made it extra perfect for getting a few splashes of water (or even more of an immersion) from the steeplechase water jump!

There are a few reasons I love steeplechase. Firstly, it feels like an adventure! But you still have the benefits of running on the track (speed, sunshine, people etc). You need to be really present in the race, to keep focus on the jumps and technique. There is a buzz when you run as spectators enjoy watching, many of them waiting around the water jump. Mostly though, I love steeples because it’s really fun and hard to take anything too seriously when you’re running around in circles, jumping obstacles and splashing through water!

There were 6 of us in the race, 2 superstars running 3km (Liam T and David L) plus myself and 3 younger guys running the 2km. It was everyone else’s first steeple event and we appreciated AO’s flexibility in letting us all run together using the shorter women’s steeple height of 0.762m.

I’m super impressed by Dave and Liam for trying out steeples for the first time. It can be daunting trying new things as an adult! The numerous memes of #steeplechasefail don’t help, as they make faceplanting seem inevitable, but in fact messing up a jump is very rare! Dave had also earlier run the 800m and 3000m, before doing the 3km steeplechase, which is just incredible!!

Pacing is extra important in steeples because the fatigue affects your legs more due to the jumps. I think I went out a bit fast on the first lap, chasing the teenage boys, and I did slow down later in the race – but still cleared the jumps ok.

Despite this, I did manage to run 7mins 47, which was almost 30 seconds faster than my Master Games event in Feb! Still far off my youthful-self PB, but I’m happy with the time.

Overall, I loved the race and am stoked to be back on the track this year, after a 10ish year absence. I can’t help but think how much fun I’ve missed out on over those years, and am excited to make sure I get amongst for the next 10 years! Thank you for making an encouraging and supportive community that has got me back to racing, track, and steeples!

Weather: Cold with the occasional shower at first and strong gusty South Westerly winds

Again Leith had a fanstastic representation of athletes taking part in the Otago One Mile Champs and the 5000m race

Leith Results and Report

Otago Mile Champs

The Leith Lasses had a fantastically successful day in tough windy and cold conditions at the Otago Mile Champs with Florence Reynolds winning the Otago Mile Champs Open Women’s Title in 5:28.18.  She was followed narrowly across the line by Hill City-University’s Taryn McLean who ran it in 5:29.22 to claim the silver in the Open Women’s.  Leith’s Alice Cuthbert was not far behind in third place (2nd Senior Woman) in 5:30.37 to claim the bronze in the Women’s Open Grade. Fourth was Leith’s Claudia Sole (3rd Senior Woman) in 5:39.95

Leith’s Stephen Johnson also had success in the Mile, achieving the silver in the Open Men’s Grade (2nd Senior Man) in 4:38.56

5000m

Unfortunately, the small 5000m field was split into a Men’s and Women’s race due to its Permit status.  Added to that was that two of fastest female runners planned to run only 3000m. This left the remaining females to run isolated due to the tiny field. The weather was also squally with gustly south west winds making for tough running on your own.

Nevertheless,Taryn McLean (Hill City-Un) and Leith’s Claudia Sole stuck to their task to record excellent times with Taryn recording 18:19.24 and Claudia recording 19:53.79

The Men’s race was run first with Leith’s Nathan Shanks finishing fourth in an excellent 17:12.12. See the full results below.

Congratulations also to Leith athlete Claudia Cooke who was the first woman across the line on handicap in 6min 42.15sec. Perfect conditions, sunny and cool with little wind made for some great times, Great to see Danny making a return to the tracks focusing on the 1500m. Not far from getting back to his best form with a well crafted almost sub 5 minute time. Although fatigued from this effort he found the energy to help Leith’s Stephanie Wilson to a personal best sub 19 minute 5000m.

Chesney, Mackley dominate >>ODT Online report Saturday, 21 September 2024

What a way to kick off the Track Season. The Otago Spring 3000m Challenge race is a collaborated event between Athletics Otago and the University of Otago. This was an Open Event for any Community, University, or Club athlete aged 15+. For further details of this iconic event, with entry details, prize details and more.

Race Report

In near perfect but breezy conditions at the Caledonian Track the field of 35 was seeded into two races. Those who planned to run under 10 minutes were in the second wave, the rest in the first wave.

In the first wave, Siena Mackley led from start to finish in a brilliant display of front running to win the race outright.  She also won the women’s grade finishing in 10:01 from second woman Millie McFadzien 10:22.9 and third woman Erin McKevitt 11:02.6.

In the second wave, Liam Chesney running for University, took the title in 8:47.8 from Jake Owen 8:52.4 and James Weber 8:54.3.

Leith Specific Report

In the A race which was held second, Leith’s Grayson Westgate finished 5th overall in 8:59.3. Sandor Toth was next Leith man across the line in a personal best of 9:26.5. A time he will be well pleased with.  The Leith women did well too in the first race, with Alice Cuthbert finishing 4th in 11:08.6. Leith’s Claudia Sole finished 5th in 11:19.4.  Claudia also won the prize for being the second University runner to cross the run in the Women’s section.

The First Wave

The Second Wave

Also….

Leith Harriers was offering a Leith only bonus challenge within the event!
Leith President, Chris Sole, was offering a significant prize for any Leith runner who beat his historical PB of 8min 16.1. For women, the equivalent time to beat would be 9min 43.82.
8:16.1 =IAAF 964 Points (Men)
9:43.82 =IAAF 964 Points (Women)

Unfortunately, no one got near his time with Grayson Westgate the closest with his 8:58.2 . Perhaps he will achieve it next year?
