Oh, What a Night!
The “Night of Fives”, ended with Leith’s Simon Cromarty and Hill City-University’s Rebekah Aitkenhead being first male and female to cross the line respectively. The A Race had 22 runners finishing. The B Race had 29 runners finishing and the combined C, D Race had 38 runners finishing. A combined total of about 80 runners. Thanks to all the organisers from Leith and Athletics Otago for putting on this event and for the supporters too.
Otago Championship Race (A Race)

Cromarty ( 15:06.47 Personal Best) and Jason van Kempen ( 15:08.10 Personal Best) had a titanic struggle from the get-go, with Cromarty leading all the way. There were less than 2 seconds separating them in the end. Cromarty won the Gold in the Men’s 35-39 category. Third across the line was Leith’s Dan Hayman (15:20.92 Personal Best) who earned the Senior Men’s Gold Medal as the first Senior Men’s registered runner to cross the line. Van Kempen ran as an unregistered runner. Fourth across the line was the excellent Men’s 45-49 runner from Fiordland Athletics, Dwight Grieve, who thrilled everyone, including himself, with his Personal Best of 15:57.04. He earned the Gold Medal in the Men’s 45-49 age category. There was a tussle between HCU sprint, 400m, 800m specialist Matthew Bolter (16:09.94 Personal Best) and Leith’s Otago Steeplechase champion Graham Fisher (16:11.97 Personal Best) for the Senior Men’s Silver medal with Bolter outlasting Fisher in a dash to the finish line with Fisher getting Bronze. Further age grade winners in the Men’s field were Leith’s Andrew Lonie 18:52.78 who won gold in the Men’s 50-54 category and Leith’s Legendary Ultra runner John Bayne who won gold in the Men’s 60-64 category in what can only be described as a superb 17:54.14 which was close to a world class age grading result of 87.61%. (90% is world class). Bayne’s time was just under 2 seconds off the Otago record of 17.52.82 set by Geoff Anderson (60) at the World Masters Games in Auckland on 23-Apr-17
In the Women’s category and running in the same race, was the excellent runner from Hill City-University Rebekah Aitkenhead who won the category outright and the Senior Women’s Gold in a personal best of 16:18.50. Second Woman across the line was Eva Pringle from the Whippets Running Project – Canterbury in a personal best of 16:28.15. Third and earning silver as the second Otago registered runner was Caversham’s Becky De La Harpe in 17:35.77. Leith’s Jessica Bray in a personal best of 18:12.75 won the Women’s Under 20 Gold medal. Next woman to finish was unregistered runner Juliet Downs in a personal best of 18:36.41. Next was Leith’s Olivia Sutherland who earned the Bronze in the Senior Women’s category in 18:43.60. Caversham’s Lynne Kerr won the Women’s 60-64 category in 36:47.51

Leith dominated the numbers in the Otago 10000m Champs today. Run in hot and almost windless and sunny weather, Leith’s Adrien Auvray Matyn finished second overall but won the Otago Senior Men’s title in 36:20.37. Leith’s Jessica Bray won the Women’s title in an excellent 40:55.37
Performance of the day has got to be Leith’s superb master’s athlete Steve Smith who smashed the Otago 10000m M75-79 record (set by Leith’s Jim Flynn in 2009) by over 4 minutes. His time was an excellent 55:34.07 despite having been stung by a wasp a few days before. The old record was 59.35.43

Leith athletes competed in a number of events, starting with the 10,000m at 8.45am. The weather was perfect, sunny and warm, with a mild North Westerly breeze which offered relief from the increasing heat. We also thank Chris Sole for being out there supporting the runners and providing time progress reports through all the races at the 200m start mark corner

Leith Results and Report
Leith performance of the day has got to be Caitlin O’Donnell’s exciting win in the Women’s 800m in 2:19.66 over HCU’s Eva Mclean (2:20.68).
In another “thriller in the half miler” the Men’s race produced a titanic finish between HCU’s emerging talent, Matt Bolter ( 2:00.03) and Leith’s rejuvenated Stephen Johnson (2:00.63). The young 20 year old Bolter edged out Johnson by just fractions of a second. Johnson later in the meet ran the 400m in 55.00 finishing third.
Leith’s Sam Bradbury-Leather (36:02.42) was finished second in the grueling 10,000m race which due to the small field resulted in all the runners having to do it on their own under the relentless morning sun over the 25 laps. Not content with the 25 laps, he added another 3.5 laps later in the meet finishing 3rd in the Men’s 1500m in 4:45.37.

Leith athletes performed well in the various events, with Graham Fisher, Stephen Johnson, Caitlin O’Donnell and Tess Molloy winning their races. culminating with the 4 x 400m Relays – where Leith entered three teams. See the happy team members photo and report below.
Leith Results and Highlights
Leith’s Graham Fisher took control of the 3000m from the start and never relinquished his lead prevailing over the young yr14 athlete from St Pauls, Brock Smith who finished with a 9:32.47 PB. Fisher’s time was 9:26.17.
In the Men’s 1500m, Leith’s Stephen Johnson immediately strode out strongly into the lead and like Graham Fisher in the 3000m, never relinquished it. Fisher probably feeling the effects of the previous 3000m race he won earlier in the meet did not challenge. Johnson finished first in 4:15.36 well clear of the second placed yr 17 Caversham Harriers athlete Dan Kelleher who finished with a PB of 4:27.59. Fisher finished an excellent third in 4:29.29.
The distance race of the day arguably was the Women’s 1500m. Here Leith’s Caitlin O’Donnell, had a great tussle with yr16 athlete Abby O’Boyle from St Pauls, outlasting her in the home stretch to prevail by just over a second. O’Donnell’s time was 4:41.41 to O’Boyle’s 4:42.56.

Congratulations to the Leith athletes who tackled the 1 Mile and the 800m on Saturday. Below is the results and report summary for the Leith athletes. Thanks for the photos from Hill City-Uni’s hotshot photographer Tim Dawbin as seen below with Tessa Molloy, Graham Fisher, Stephen Johnson and Alice Cuthbert showing their skills on the track
The weather was perfect for both the mile and the 800m. The eventual winner of the mile, HCU’s Jake Owen, yr 20 (4:23.49) took ownership of the race from the outset, resulting in a battle for second place between Caversham’s Daniel Kelleher, 2nd, yr 17 (4:36.54), Leith’s Graham Fisher, 3rd, yr 33 (4:38.22) and HCU’s Thomas Weatherall, 4th, yr 16 (4:39.41).
In the 800m Leith’s Stephen Johnson (yr 29) battled gamely to finish third in 1:59.42 about 2 seconds shy of the HCU young duo of winner Matt Bolter (yr 20) 1:57.25 and second placed Nicolas Alvarez Rey-Virag (yr 20) 1:57.65. Bolter and Alvarez Rey-Virag arguably produced of the finish of the day with just fractions of a second between them
In the women’s 800m, HCU’s Eva Mclean ( yr 14) won in 2:22.61 with Leith’s Alice Cuthbert (yr 27) just over a second behind in a gutsy second place 2:23.75.
Leith’s Tessa Molloy (yr44), dusting out the track cobwebs, didn’t feature in the major placings but was running against much younger athletes in both the mile and the 800m and will definitley improve as she adjusts to the short distance races. See Leith results below:

The weather wasn’t too bad, cool light winds from the South West. Mostly ideal for running some good times. It was awesome to see the support the Leith amongst the spectators
Graham Fisher won the 800m in a smart time of 2:05.81. Ben Pigou had earlier finished a good third in the 3000m in 9:46.97. Mark O’Neill had earlier also run the 3000m finishing fourth in 10:45.59 and would have been satisfied with his 4th place finish in the 800m in 2:28.28. Colin Tocher, having run the 3000m in a PB of 11:32.19, where he took a bit of a tumble and was mistaken for Mark O’Neill by the race commentator, also achieved a PB of 2:34.12 in the 800m
The last race for Leith athletes on the day was the Women’s 800m which Alice Cuthbert ran in 2:25.40 finishing 5th in a quality field won by Abby O’boyle (St Pauls) who had a procession of athletes finishing behind her with just a second between each athlete.

This was the Opening Otago Senior Interclub Track and Field meeting of the 2025/26 season
Due to the Otago Half Marathon taking place at Balclutha today, the number of Leith athletes was severely depleted. Leith had three athletes running with Bryan Staunton and Colin Tocher having the 5000m all to themselves and Claudia Sole opting for the 1500m. Conditions were gruellingly hot with strong gusty winds . Bryan gradually drew away from Colin after the first lap and finished first in a time of 18:44.38 with Colin finishing in 21:24.18.
Colin had entered the 1500m Men’s race, but was not feeling too good after the 5000m, so he decided to give it a miss. In the Women’s 1500m Claudia Sole gamely held on to 3th place over the first two laps, however the Ariki runner Kotomiyo took control of their private duel to finish a comfortable third with Claudia having to be content with 4th place. See the detailed results below.
