Event Description

The Brighton Backyard Ultra “Running in Paradise” starting on 19 September 2026 is a last one standing event in Dunedin, NZ.

A Backyard Ultra is a form of ultramarathon race where competitors must consecutively run a 6.7km course in less than one hour, every hour. When each lap is completed, the remaining time within the hour is used to recover and replenish for the next hour’s race. The race finishes when one person completes one more lap than anyone else.

Each lap starts at the Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club. The route then heads over the bridge to the domain, over some rocks, then down to the beach for a 2km run, before heading up to the Big Rock and finally back to the surf club for the next lap.

Congratulations to the leith athletes and supporters who took part in this event

Jocelyn Springthorpe writes:

It was a fun day at the Shunters and Grunters relay today. See our photo above

On Saturday Glenda, Sandy, Jocelyn and Steve took part in a blustery and dusty Shunters and Grunters relay on the rail trail organised by Hill City. There was a mix of runners and walkers from Leith, Hill City and Caversham in the six teams over four legs. The wind was so strong at times people were nearly blown off their feet before we started and briefing held in the railway station so that we didn’t sacrifice our race numbers to the wind while trying to pin them on. Glenda, Sandy and Steve were all first runners for their teams in the 8.2 km leg from Hyde Railway Station to Tiroiti. Jocelyn ran the third 4km leg for her (and Steve’s) team putting them nicely in front at that point we hoped. The 4th leg was hotly contested by strong runners with fast feet. The event concluded at the Waipiata pub with a great round of hot pies. It would be very good to see more blue singlets in the mix for this fun event next year!

Leith Results and Report

Margie Campbell (8th overall, 1st F) enthuses about the “The Meridian Hydro 1/2 marathon lived up to everything I had been told about. I was having clothing dilemmas as last year it had been a particularly frosty day, but once we arrived in absolutely perfect running conditions (they actually couldn’t have been more ideal for a 1/2 marathon!) I quickly changed from my thermal and gloves option to the simple Leith singlet and shorts. A unique start with a shotgun sent us off through a paddock before doing a lap of the old Kepler Farm and on to the Lake-to-lake trail between Manapouri and Te Anau. I kept it steady along the trails, lots more up and down than what I had expected! I managed to keep the shoes mostly dry through a little ford and finished feeling really strong. Had a great time with Aaron (9th, 3rd MM40-49), Kristy (Eyles), (13th 2nd F), and Alice (Barach) (69th 7th MW40-49), as well as meeting an old Leith member Jason Palmer who was excited to form more of a relationship with the Fiordland and Leith.”

51 12 Cat. 1 Margie CAMPBELL AUS 40-44W 05:31:37

69 55 Cat. 7 Richard CAMPBELL NZL 40-44 05:44:02

Margie writes: “It was an honest day on that course. We had forgotten just how all the ups and downs over the stairs tenderise the legs, and the first 90min being in the dark keeps you very “on” mentally so not to trip or fall. Amazing views once the sunrise came through a lot up the sandstone escarpments, and listening to the dawn chorus of all the whip birds, kookaburras, cockatoos, and lyre birds is pretty special. Neither of us (Richard) felt particularly bouncy or great on the day for whatever reason, even though we’d felt we’d had a good build up. But no injuries, we stayed upright and caught up with lots of friends. The photos from Ponydales looked like it was perfect conditions there as well!”

Congratulations to the Leith athletes and supporters who took part in this grueling event

Our Admin says well done to all our runners at this weekends Best Dam Backyard Ultra. Great report below for Trail and Ultra co-captain Rocky Allan
Imagine a course so flat, fast and wonderfully scenic that you can actually have an enjoyable time? Well it actually exists in the wonderful small town of Otemetata.
The Leith turnout for this event was huge! And oh so many new personal bests – Jenny winning the most improved from 9 laps to the prestigious 24, and 3 Leith runners joining the 30 yard club.
Leith seemed to bring the vibes, whether it was carrying a speaker blasting music along the lap, or just sticking in a group to get through the tough hours, it was so cool to see everyone working together. The perfect conditions seemed to have followed us too- the day and night both cloudless, still, and warm (it was hot at night to everyone’s surprise) and our group strength was proven to work with almost everyone coming away with a new PB.
It’s so cool to see what our community is fostering- and this is only the beginning!

Chris Sole had to this say after the event

This weekend, the Best Dam BYU, directed by Steve Tripp and Chris Taylor (Inch Events) was a chance to “see how far you can go”. In doing so, you shared the hard journey, group energy with numerous others holding similar aspirations. Rocky Allan (one of our Leith Ultra Trail Captains) completed a PB 30 yds (laps with an average 47:38) covering 201.30 km. His previous best was 24. He enthusiastically writes: “Imagine a course so flat, fast and wonderfully scenic that you can have an enjoyable time? Well, it exists in the wonderful small town of Otemetata. The Leith turnout for this event was huge! And oh, so many new personal bests – Jennie (Duffy) winning the most improved from 9 laps to the prestigious 24, and 4 Leith runners joining the 30-yard club (Andy Smith 38, Chris Jervis, Theo Atkinson and Rocky all 30)

Rocky Allan muses:

“Fools and Horses was enjoyable! I met and became friends with some new cool people including Bryon Powell – iRunFar Founder and Rob Lord who won Southern Lakes Stage Race — I was perched up on an exposed hill in open country using one of Teo’s cameras and shooting pics of the runners; In the end it was a 4min win to the Horses! Excited to head to Sydney next week and crew a mate in the Backyard Ultra with 750 participants. It’s going to be wild!”

Congratulations to Leith’s Tadhg Ryan-Charleton who completed 15 loops of 6.7km.

Tadhg writes: “We left Dunedin in glorious sunshine on Thursday. The weather held up well for the BYU, except for rain overnight. The course, mixed terrain, and race organisation were excellent. I finished at midnight – after 15 laps (100k) and about 6,000 jaffa cakes. The race was won by a local runner, Jason Sweney (39 laps), in the tent next to us. He ran with his son. He was still managing good humour and impressive running posture after nearly two straight days of running.”
